On April 16, the quota law which imposes 30 percent of women on electoral lists in Burkina Faso was adopted by 87 votes out of 103 deputies present at the National Assembly meeting.

This law aims at struggling against inequalities affecting women; and at promoting their full participation in political life, explained Roch Marc Christian Kaboré, President of the National Assembly.

According to the figures of the National Institute of Statistics and Demography (INSD), women comprise 52% of the population, but only 15 % of them hold decision-making positions.

This legislation will enable the effective presence of at least 30% of women on the candidates lists presented by each political party, and those who overtake this percentage will be provided with financial help. However, the parties who do not' reach this quota, will see a 50% cut in their funding. If applied, such incentives and sanctions, would logically enable to ensure the respect of this law, which is considered by political analysts, as a qualitative boom in the field of political governance.

The campaign is pleased with this step forward and pays tribute to the action which was carried out by Human rights defense organizations of Burkina Faso, in order to reduce discriminations and to promote the presence of women in political life.
